Until quite recently, most office workers travelled to a workplace each day. They sat at a desk for eight hours, drank coffee with their colleagues, and went home in the evening. Today, however, working from home has become a normal part of life for millions of people around the world. The change happened quickly. In 2020, when many companies closed their offices, employees began working from kitchen tables and spare bedrooms. At first this was difficult. Some people did not have a quiet space, and others felt cut off from their teams. After a few months, however, many discovered surprising advantages. They saved hours each week by not commuting. They had more time for exercise, family, and sleep. Not every job suits remote work. Doctors, builders and teachers usually need to be present with the people they help. But for office workers who spend their day on a computer, the location matters less than people once thought. Many companies now offer a mix: two or three days at home, the rest in the office. Researchers call this 'hybrid work', and most surveys show it is what employees prefer.
